MISSION STATEMENT: "Our goals and objectives are to raise the profiel and improve the standards of general practice; attend to the needs of our members, the community and disadvantaged groups; improve the communication between our members and other health care providers; and assist in the delivery of efficient, effective and cost effective health care."

QUALITY POLICY: "The Division strives to ensure that all products and services provided meet the needs of its members, the general practitioners and fully comply with all contract requirements and best practice initiatives. Constant review, monitoring and measuring are incorporated into all produce and service design. Implementation and maintenance are undertaken by all levels of the organisation including the Board and all staff."

PURPOSE OF THE DIVISION AND QUALITY OBJECTIVES: The Division's Constitution outlines the purpose and objectives of the Division as follows:

• enabling general practitioners to contribute to health planning at the local community level;
• providing better access to available and appropriate general practitioner services for patients and reducing inappropriate duplication of services;
• meeting the special (and localised) health needs of community groups (such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and those with non-English speaking backgrounds) or people with chronic conditions, particularly where these needs are not adequately addressed by the current health system;
• facilitating the advancement of general practice as a coordinator and gatekeeper for primary health particularly in relation to the management of chronic disease for the benefit of the community;
• enhancing educational and professional development opportunities for general practitioners, general practitioners in training and undergraduates and conducting any associated training;
• facilitating increased general practitioner focus on disease and sickness prevention and health promotion activities within their local communities;
• improving the efficiency and effectiveness of health services at the local community level and advancing the interests of general practice patients and the general health of consumers within the community;
• undertaking research to assist general practitioners to provide better health services to the community;
• facilitating improved liaison between general practitioners and other areas of the health care system and its consumers;
• ensuring the effective integration of general practice with other elements of the health care system;
• any other objects which are, in the opinion of the Directors, consistent with the above.
